We learn that she is fuimko handicapped, that her mind is like that of a child and that she cannot care for herself. That it was said at all by an ordinary citizen signals something monumental has happened post-world war.

The two main female characters are almost impossible to read in their motivations, and as such, the title becomes a little obvious. And since Masks is so heavily reliant on a fairly deep understanding of that novel, perhaps it is just beyond me. As well as containing a slow-building yet intense plot, it ties in with such classics of Japanese literature such as The Tale of Genji and Noh drama.
