Part romance, part action adventure and pure historical, the novel relates the lives of two social opposites but refuses to dip into a Pretty Woman type of trope, instead relying on creative storytelling to make it stand out.


As she explores the contours of Wes’ addiction to opium, Cullinan delivers some gut-wrenching scenes; likewise, with the recounting of Michael’s early life with his courtesan mother. After meeting Wes at a society ball and following a sizzling sexual encounter, Michael reverts back to the terror he experienced when he was a child and has issues similar to PTSD. Both men—aside from their handicaps—are also damaged psychologically. Wonderful story, great characters and a wonderful happy ending.

I had a serious problem with this book that had nothing to do with pet-peeves or chicks-with-dicks but I have to go back and re-read some parts to be sure. They seemed very open in their relationship, sneaking a kiss on the ear, holding hands under a blanket on the train. Enter another unhappy man, stage left. And Penny was probably my favorite character…and Rodger.

Also, the book should carry a trigger warning for child abuse.
